professional fangirl, don't take me seriously  Creepers Currently Stalking Me

“I wish it was more socially acceptable to be gay without having to tell your friends and family” - in a large chunk of the world, it’s not just socially acceptable, it’s socially expected - and enforced violently. But I get what you mean - that in a culture like the US, why should it matter? I believe coming out is extremely personal, and with that in mind, it should be entirely up to you if you do it. But there are many benefits to coming out, both personally and for those around you. Coming out shows those who support anti-gay discrimination who it really affects. Also, because many groups teach that being gay is an abomination and a choice, a lot of people who are gay may feel shame and confusion - and coming out and being open, honest, and unapologetically you shows those people that they’re not alone. So - to me, and this is just my experience, if coming out means that I have to deal with the bullshit of fighting an uphill battle in a homophobic society, but at the same time show someone that who they are is okay - it’s worth it.
